Haldor Topsøe (HTAS) is an independent catalyst manufacturing, research, engineering and consulting company specialised in heterogeneous catalysis and the design of industrial plants based on catalytic processes. HTAS employs about 1600 people and approximately 200 are employed in the R&D division.
An outstanding know-how on fundamental and applied research is maintained in extensive research laboratories, in pilot units and large-scale demonstration units. An important issue in catalyst development and manufacture is the science of ceramic materials and processing. HTAS has provided the world wide basis technology for fuel processing systems, which convert hydrocarbon fuel into hydrogen and synthesis gas suitable for fuel cell application. Based on own process technology, catalyst and reactor design HTAS has delivered Balance of Plant technology and units on a commercial basis for more than a decade.
Since 1989 the HTAS has been an active partner within the Danish solid oxide fuel cell programme in collaboration with other Danish research institutes co-ordinated by Risø National Laboratory and the company has participated in EU solid oxide projects since 1991.The consortium of HTAS and Risø has established a cell production plant with a capacity of more than 1 MW per year to demonstrate low cost manufacturing of planar anode-supported cells. Based on own materials and cells the consortium is currently developing and testing SOFC stacks. HTAS has entered into collaboration with Wärtsilä for large-scale SOFC systems (200 kW+).
Wärtsilä’s responsibility in this regard includes system level integration and marketing.
